Understanding AIV Diagnostic Targets
Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) contains 8 segmented RNA segments. Highly conserved structural genes (NP · M) are utilized for universal screening, while surface glycoprotein genes (HA · NA) determine subtype classification and pathogenicity.
UNIVERSAL SCREENING
NP · M Gene
Conserved Internal Nucleoprotein & Matrix
Represents highly stable internal genomic regions of Influenza A virus. Essential as the first-line screening marker for reliable detection of all avian influenza strains regardless of mutation status.
SURFACE SUBTYPING
HA 1-16 Subtypes
Hemagglutinin Glycoprotein Antigens
Mediates host cell receptor binding and viral entry. Divided into 16 distinct avian HA subtypes (H1-H16). Focuses particularly on high-risk zoonotic and poultry-lethal strains such as H5, H7, and H9.
SURFACE SUBTYPING
NA 1-9 Subtypes
Neuraminidase Glycoprotein Enzymes
Catalyzes cleavage of sialic acid to enable progeny virus budding and transmission. Differentiates N1 through N9 subtypes for complete phylogenetic classification (e.g., H5N1, H5N6, H7N9).

Strategic Selection & Application Guide
Choose the most suitable assay methodology depending on testing turnaround requirements, throughput capacity, and epidemiological analysis depth.
WHEN TO CHOOSE REAL-TIME RT-PCR
Routine Surveillance & Rapid Emergency Screening
- Target Audience: Veterinary reference labs, poultry breeding facilities, international quarantine stations requiring rapid turnaround.
- Key Strength: High sensitivity probe detection, automated closed-tube workflow with zero post-PCR contamination risk, rapid time-to-result (~90 mins).
- Recommended Kits: AIV M Kit (IP15004) for universal gatekeeping, followed immediately by H5 Kit (IP15005) or H7 Kit (IP15006) for HPAI risk verification.
WHEN TO CHOOSE MULTI-TUBE RT-PCR
Comprehensive Subtyping & Outbreak Investigation
- Target Audience: National animal health institutes, epidemiological researchers, and labs managing diverse or unknown avian viral strains.
- Key Strength: Simultaneous multi-gene profiling and full antigenic mapping across HA (1-16) and NA (1-9) with cost-effective standard PCR equipment.
- Recommended Kits: AIV Multi-tube Kit (IPC11009) for simultaneous multi-target confirmation; HA (IPC12020) & NA (IPC12021.E) Kits for complete phylogenetic lineage identification.
